NEW - A GRIEF OBSERVED/ WRITING ABOUT LOVE AND LOSS - SEE BELOW
You love to write, but there is never enough time, never enough
quiet…or never enough motivation. Your good intentions to set pen to
paper or finger to keyboard never materialize. Sound familiar?
Then
a writing group might be just the antidote you need. Come, try a weekly writing session or a retreat — writing in response
to exercises, reading what you write to supportive listeners (if you so
choose) and reveling in the creative wonder of words.
We use the Amherst Writers and Artists’ method created and honed for over twenty five years by Pat Schneider, author of Writing Alone and with Others.
An internationally known model, this method’s goal is to build
confidence as we discover (or re-discover) our writing Voices -
including those Voices that have been harmed or hindered by previous
writing experiences.
Using what is referred to as process
writing or free writing the AWA model affirms what is strong in the
fresh material written during groups sessions rather than immediately
responding with critique.
Through writing prompts and
exercises new material and themes arise that might not otherwise
have been discovered. There is also opportunity, during a weekly writing group and at some retreats, to bring material on which you have been working in order to receive constructive feedback from a larger group.

COME WRITE WITH ME - WEEKLY WRITING GROUPS 2008 - 2009
These weekly writing groups are designed to provide writers of all genres an opportunity to focus on the art and craft of writing. In each session we write twice from guided, timed exercises that trigger imagination and encourage craft. Then, after each writing period, writers are invited to share their work with the group if they so choose. Opportunity is also provided for response to manuscripts or works-in-progress when requested.
You need not worry about having completed work to bring to this group. The only required materials - a pen and inexpensive notebook. Group size limited to 8. Open to all 16 and older.
Payment in full is due prior to the first session (see deadlines below) though weekly payment can be arranged if necessary. A limited number of scholarships are also available. If however, after the first session you decide this method is not a good fit, your money will be returned.

ALL YEAR LONG - COME EDIT WITH US
This
is a new offering, developed for writers who have participated in an
AWA writing group, retreat or both. With an editor’s eye we’ll help you
polish that final draft in preparation for sending it off into the
world — to either a publisher or to be self-published or to share with family and friends — and offer other publishing resources.
How it works:
Colette and Mary will collaboratively read your manuscript in advance
and follow-up with an hour-long personal meeting with you. Cost Cost will be determined on an hourly basis and thus depends on the length of the manuscript to be reviewed.
About Mary Haab
Mary brings not only her understanding of the AWA method but also 20
years of experience as an English and writing teacher. Mary developed
the Creative Writing Program at Portage Central High School in Portage,
Michigan, and served as co-advisor to PCHS’s award winning literary-art
magazine, Montage. She has written the book In Association, a history of the Port Sheldon, Michigan area and continues to write and edit a regularly published newsletter.
About Colette

English Literature background and over twenty years experience writing
and editing (her own) children’s curriculum, sermons and journal
